Nestled in the heart of Piedmont, the city of Turin is not only known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and exquisite chocolates, but also for a beloved traditional drink—Bicerin.

A decadent blend of espresso, dark chocolate, and whipped cream, this comforting beverage has been a local favorite since the 18th century. Bicerin's origins trace back to the earlier "bavareisa," but over time, it has evolved into the iconic drink that captivates both locals and tourists alike.

As you sip this velvety concoction, you're experiencing a piece of history, as it was once favored by the influential Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour. Let’s take a closer look at this exquisite drink, its origins, and how to recreate it in your own kitchen.

The Origins of Bicerin

Bicerin, which means "small glass" in Piedmontese dialect, is a renowned drink from Turin made with coffee, dark chocolate, and cream. Dating back to the 18th century, it evolved from another beverage known as "bavareisa." Highly favored by Camillo Benso Count of Cavour, it is now a sought-after specialty in the finest cafés in Turin.

Recognized in 2001 by the Piedmont Region as a "traditional Piedmontese beverage," the original recipe is closely guarded by "Caffè Al Bicerin dal 1763," an elegant pastry shop near the Sanctuary of the Consolata, also mentioned by Umberto Eco in "The Prague Cemetery."
