Dear Lykkers! Let’s make some awesome travel memories together!
1. The Wave: Let’s start with the crown jewel. The Wave is a mesmerizing sandstone formation known for its undulating, colorful patterns. It's a popular spot for photographers and nature lovers alike. However, access is highly restricted, and you’ll need to win a lottery to get a permit. It’s worth the effort, though!
2. White Pocket: If The Wave sounds a bit too elusive, White Pocket is a fantastic alternative. It’s equally stunning but less crowded. The rock formations here are like something from another planet—swirled colors and bizarre shapes that make you feel like you’re walking on an alien landscape.
3. Paria Canyon: For a bit of adventure, head to Paria Canyon. It’s a great spot for hiking and exploring narrow canyons with beautiful, varied rock formations. This area offers more solitude compared to other attractions and is perfect for those who enjoy a bit of rugged exploration.
4. Buckskin Gulch: If you’re into slot canyons, Buckskin Gulch is a must. It’s one of the longest and deepest slot canyons in the world. Plan for a full day of hiking, and be prepared for some narrow squeezes and awe-inspiring scenery.
5. Coyote Buttes: Home to The Wave, this area also features other striking rock formations. It's worth a visit even if you don't score a Wave permit. Coyote Buttes South offers more of the same incredible rock artistry with fewer crowds.
Entry Fees: Good news! There’s no entry fee to Vermilion Cliffs National Monument. However, if you’re aiming to visit The Wave, the permit process involves a $7 non-refundable application fee. Each permit costs an additional $7 per person.
Opening Hours: The monument is open year-round, 24 hours a day. However, it’s best to visit during daylight hours for safety and to fully enjoy the scenery.
Permits and Reservations: To visit The Wave, you’ll need a permit obtained through a lottery system. There are two lotteries: a four-month advance lottery and a daily lottery for last-minute permits. The advance lottery applications are accepted from the 1st to the 15th of each month, and results are announced around the 20th. The daily lottery is held at 9 a.m. at the Grand Staircase-Escalante Visitor Center. For White Pocket, you don't need a permit, but it’s wise to check road conditions before heading out.
Traffic and Accessibility: The monument is accessible via several main routes. However, expect unpaved, rugged roads, particularly if you’re visiting White Pocket or Buckskin Gulch. A high-clearance or four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended. Road conditions can be challenging, especially in winter, so check for closures or updates on the BLM website.
What to Bring: Don’t forget plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, and a good map. Cell phone reception can be spotty in these remote areas, so be prepared for some off-grid time.
Safety Tips: Always let someone know your plans before heading out. The desert can be harsh, so take care to avoid getting lost and watch out for extreme weather conditions.
So there you have it—a quick guide to the amazing Vermilion Cliffs National Monument. Pack your sense of adventure and get ready to be blown away by some of the most spectacular landscapes you’ll ever see. Enjoy the journey, and happy exploring!
