We all love discovering cities that mix history, culture, and modern life — and Düsseldorf is one of those special places. Whether you're a first-time visitor or planning a return trip, this lively city on the Rhine River offers so much to explore.

In this guide, we'll walk you through everything you need to know — from getting here and moving around, to where to shop, what to see, and the best times to enjoy all the city's highlights. Let's get started!

Arriving and Getting Around Düsseldorf

We can easily fly into Düsseldorf International Airport (DUS), which connects directly to many major cities worldwide. From the airport to the city center, the SkyTrain automated monorail takes about 6 minutes and costs around $6.60 for a one-way ticket. Alternatively, regional trains (S-Bahn) are available and cost about $3.85.

Once in the city, the Rheinbahn public transport network covers trams, buses, and local trains. A day ticket costs about $9.70 and allows unlimited travel in zones 1 and 2 — perfect for exploring the main city and nearby areas. If we prefer walking, the city center is compact, especially near the Rhine River and Old Town.

Exploring Düsseldorf's Art Scene

The Kunstakademie Düsseldorf is a prestigious art academy, but it's mainly for students and doesn't have a public museum. However, for art lovers, the Museum Kunstpalast is a must-visit. It features classical to modern art, including paintings, sculptures, and glass art.

- Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM; closed on Mondays

- Ticket price: Adults $13.20, reduced $6.60

- Location: Ehrenhof 4-5, easy to reach by tram lines 701 and 705 (stop: Ehrenhof)

Visiting during weekdays is best to avoid weekend crowds, and we can combine this with a stroll in the nearby Rhine park.

Shopping on Königsallee

The Königsallee is famous for luxury shopping, lined with boutiques from brands like Chanel, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton. Although window shopping is free, if we want to buy, expect premium prices. The street is pedestrian-friendly, with a beautiful canal running through it.

Most shops open from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM Monday through Saturday, but remember most shops are closed on Sundays. Many cafés and restaurants along the Kö remain open on Sundays, perfect for relaxing.

Enjoying the Rhine River Promenade

Walking along the Rhine promenade is free and open year-round. It's especially lively during summer months (May to September), when outdoor cafés and boat tours operate daily.

- Boat tours: Prices vary between $16.50 to $27.50 per person for a 1–2 hour trip. The tours depart from various piers along the Rhine, such as the Rheinwerft pier near the Old Town.

- Best time: Late afternoon or early evening to enjoy sunset views over the river.

During July, the famous Rhine River Carnival fills the banks with parades, music, and festivities attracting over 4.5 million visitors — a unique experience if we visit then.

Visiting Düsseldorf's Old Town (Altstadt)

Altstadt is packed with lively taverns, historic buildings, and local flavor.

- Tips: It can get crowded on weekends, so visiting on weekday evenings is more relaxed.

- Free walking tours are available and a great way to learn about the history — just remember to tip your guide.

Best Time to Visit Düsseldorf

The ideal time is from May to September, when weather is warm and festivals like the Rhine River Carnival happen. Spring offers blooming parks and fewer tourists, while winter brings festive holiday markets filled with lights and seasonal cheer (late November to December).

Practical Tips for Travelers

- Accommodation: Book early during summer festivals; prices range from budget hostels (~$28/night) to luxury hotels ($165+).

- Language: German is official, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas.

- Currency: Euro (€), but you'll need to exchange money or use cards — credit cards are accepted widely, but carrying some cash is helpful.

- Safety: Düsseldorf is safe, but standard precautions apply, especially in crowded festival areas.
