The Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), officially known as State Route 1, is a breathtaking coastal road stretching 659 miles (1,061 km) along California’s coast.
For most travelers, the most scenic section lies between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Unlike Interstate 5, which is faster but lacks views, the PCH offers stunning ocean scenery, charming towns, and iconic landmarks.
As of early 2025, a section in Big Sur remains closed due to landslides, with repairs expected to finish by summer. If traveling soon, take US-101 as a detour. The affected section is between Esalen Institute and Lucia.
For real-time road updates, check the official Caltrans website before your trip.
We highly recommend driving from San Francisco to Los Angeles. This way, you’ll drive on the ocean side, making it easier to stop for photos and enjoy the views.
Car Rental: San Francisco has plenty of rental options, and a one-way drop-off in Los Angeles is possible for an extra fee.
Ideally, plan for 3 days and 2 nights, though more time allows for a deeper experience. While it’s possible to complete the drive in one day, you’d miss the best sights.
Spring (March-May) and Fall (September-November) offer the best weather and fewer crowds.
Summer: Morning fog is common but clears by noon. Sunsets are spectacular.
Winter: Rain can lead to landslides and temporary closures. Always check road conditions before departure.
Half Moon Bay: A scenic coastal stop, great for a morning coffee with ocean views.
Monterey Bay Aquarium: One of the best aquariums in the U.S. ($59.95 per person, $44.95 per child.). Open 10 AM–5 PM.
Whale Watching: Monterey is famous for its tours ($60–$90 per person).
17-Mile Drive: A scenic private road ($12 per car), featuring Pebble Beach Golf Course and stunning ocean cliffs.
Carmel-by-the-Sea: A fairytale-like town with boutique shops and art galleries. Great for an evening stroll.
Where to Stay:
Monterey (more affordable hotels)
Carmel (charming but pricier stays)
If Big Sur is closed, take US-101 and skip the following stops. Otherwise, enjoy:
Bixby Bridge: One of California’s most famous photo spots.
McWay Falls: A stunning waterfall dropping onto the beach ($10 parking at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park).
Elephant Seal Rookery: See hundreds of seals sunbathing along the coast.
San Simeon’s Hearst Castle: A lavish mansion tour ($30 per person, $15 per child). Open 9 AM–4 PM.
Where to Stay:
San Luis Obispo (budget-friendly)
Pismo Beach (better ocean views, great sunsets)
Solvang:A Danish-style village with windmills, bakeries, and craft beverages.
Santa Barbara: Visit the historic courthouse and enjoy seafood by the pier.
Santa Monica Pier: Ride the Ferris wheel at sunset and end your road trip by the ocean.
Optional: Drive another 30 minutes into Los Angeles for more sightseeing.
Fuel Up Early: Gas stations are scarce in Big Sur and more expensive.
Restroom Breaks: Public restrooms can be limited. Use them when available.
Start Early: Avoid traffic and enjoy quieter stops.
Pack Layers: Coastal weather can be unpredictable, even in summer.
A drive along the Pacific Coast Highway is an unforgettable adventure. From rugged cliffs to picturesque towns, this journey offers endless beauty and memorable experiences.
