Fashion mogul Serge Azria has sold a beachfront estate in Malibu, California, for $177 million.

The deal set a California record for the second highest-priced home sold in the U.S. after billionaire Ken Griffin bought a New York City penthouse for about $238 million in 2019.

Previously, the highest-priced deal in California was set by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who bought Warner Manor from media mogul David Geffen for $165 million last year, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The property is located on about 7 acres in two parcels in Malibu's Paradise Cove neighborhood, according to Mr. Azria. It was previously owned by a trust associated with Hollywood producer Jerry Weintraub, records show. Mr. Azria and his wife, Florence Azria, bought it in 2013 for $41 million, records show.

Mr. Azria said it took him four years to completely renovate the property. "We are proud that someone was willing to pay that kind of price for what I created," he said, declining to name the buyers.

The main house is about 10,000 square feet, and the property has a movie theater, a spa, and two guest houses, he said.

Mr. Azria said he decided to sell because he was working on another project: a circa 1927 Spanish-style house in Bel-Air. "We are the type of person who likes to move on and do something different," he said.

In 2012, Mr. Azria, the designer of the Joie, Equipment, and Current/Elliott brands sold his company Dutch LLC, the brother of the late Max Azria, founder of the fashion house BCBG Max Azria Group.
